How do you know when it’s time for a new toilet?

Toilets are something you (and every other member of your family) use everyday, multiple times a day. Most people clean them at the very least once a week, and yet, I bet you have never thought about needing to replace a toilet (unless you are undertaking a full bathroom renovation).

What signs should you be looking out for that your toilet is nearing the end of its life and might be requiring replacement?

1 Cracks and leaks

Most toilets are made of porcelain or china, and just like your favourite coffee cup or vase, they may crack and leak. If you don’t notice the crack itself, generally you will be able to observe a puddle of water at the base of your toilet (that is not the result of a poorly aimed male). If you notice your toilet is cracked or leaking, it’s time for a new one!

2 Regular blockages or failure to flush effectively

If you are facing weekly toilet blockages, blockages of just regular toilet matter (normal sized poops, wees and toilet paper) or are finding that you have more 'unflushables’ than usual, then it is likely that you have an old, low flush toilet that is no longer functioning effectively. Rather than continuing to deal with its inability to cope, you probably need a new loo.

3 Constant repairs

Just like a car that is nearing the end of its life, if your toilet is constantly needing repairs, it is likely that your best (and most cost effective) option is to replace it.

4 Wobbling and instability

Does sitting on your loo make you think you might be experiencing a small earthquake, or have you been questioning just how many bevvies you’ve had for the evening? While there are simple explanations for a wobbly loo (perhaps you simply need to tighten a couple of screws) it can also be a sign of damage to the structure on which your toilet sits, such as water damage and rot. If your loo is wobbly and you can’t find the cause - it may very well need replacing, give us a call on 0439 648 390 to check it out for you, before it throws you off!

5 Scratches and wear

As a very regularly used component of your home, your toilet is likely to start to show signs of wear. Toilet seats might fade or crack, cisterns might become damaged by sun, and your throne might be covered in scratches and marks. While none of these things affect the ability of your toilet to work like a toilet, you may wish to replace it for cosmetic reasons.

6 Mineral deposit build up

If your toilet constantly has hard water sitting in it, it may be subject to hard water deposits and mineral build ups, while in some instances these are able to be removed, in other instances, they can start to affect the efficiency of your loo as well as looking unsightly and being almost impossible to remove.

If you have started to notice that your toilet isn’t looking or performing like it should, we suggest you give us a call on
0439 648 390 and we will inspect your loo and provide you with a recommendation as to what action you should take moving forward to repair or replace it.
