Is Hydronic Heating Safe for my Family, Pets & Plants?

When you have a home full of life (plants, pets and people) you want to make sure that the heating option that you choose is safe for every living being in the family.

While many of you will be aware that air conditioning can be detrimental to plants (you need to make sure that they are at least 6 feet from vents, that you mist them to maintain the humidity they need to survive and that they may struggle with big quick temperature changes). Did you know that air conditioners can also circulate pet dander and allergens around your home, making it potentially dangerous for people who suffer badly from allergies and uncomfortable for those with hayfever.

Other forms of heating have obvious risks;

  • Electric heaters pose the risk of fire and electric shock
  • Fireplaces & gas heaters (particularly those with open flames) pose a risk of fire and burns (when stoking them, or if hot surfaces are touched, particularly by toddlers with their soft skin).

So how does hydronic heating measure up in the safety stakes for each of the members of your family?

Hydronic heating and plants:

Hydronic heating is perfectly safe for your indoor plants, as a matter of fact, in the 1800’s many greenhouses were warmed by hydronic heating, allowing their owners to grow a wide variety of plants year round. Back then, the water was heated by a coal boiler, which was much less environmentally friendly and required far more work than a gas boiler or an electric heat pump, but otherwise the application was the same.

As hydronic heating maintains the natural humidity levels in your home, it won’t dry out your plants or result in yellowed leaves, however you will still need to ensure you are careful not to place your plants right beside doors where they will regularly be affected by cold blasts of air from outside!

Hydronic heating and pets:

Hydronic heating provides a safe and comfortable warmth throughout your home. With no open flames, freestanding units (that can be knocked over), exposed electrical connections or hot surfaces, hydronic heating is perfectly safe for your furry, scaley or feathery friends. With no airflow being generated by hydronic heating, it won’t circulate unpleasant pet smells, fluff, feathers and pet dander.

Hydronic heating and humans:

With consistent radiant heat, not affected by drafts, hydronic heating will leave you feeling warm and cosy in every corner of your home.

There are no:

  • Open flames
  • Freestanding units (that can be knocked over by children or careless or frail adults)
  • Exposed electrical connections
  • Hot surfaces

This means that you are safe from fires, burns and electrocution.

With no airflow being generated by hydronic heating (the heat is distributed via thermal radiation), allergens, pollen, pet dander and dust won’t be circulated and any radiator or towel rail surfaces are easily cleaned by wiping over with a damp cloth - making hydronic heating a fantastic solution for people who suffer from allergies and hay fever.

Heat pump technology is revolutionising the way we heat water for domestic use. Unlike traditional systems that rely on direct heating methods, heat pump hot water systems work on the principles of heat transfer. Using significantly less energy than traditional systems, a heat pump system offers significantly lower running costs than traditional systems. Click through to learn more.
